Valentine was born in 19 Oct 1871 in Wendelin, Illinois.
He was married first to Elizabeth "Lizzie" M. MNU. The couple had four children: Clara J. Schmitt (1895-1970), Willie Schmitt (1898-1899), Serena S. Schmitt (1901-1966), and Sophia M. Schmitt (1903-1967). The couple (married six years) is found in the Census of 1900 living with their daughter, Clara, in South Muddy, Illinois. Valentine is a farmer, born in Illinois and both of his parents were born in Indiana. It is stated that Lizzie was born in Indiana and both of her parents were born in Germany.[1]
Lizzie died in 1905. Valentine married a second time to Mertha Margaret Hackney Thompson on 11 Jan 1909 in Vanderbugh, Indiana. [2] The couple are found living on their non-mortgaged farm in South Muddy in the Census of 1910 with his three daughters, Clara (5), Serena (9), Sophia (6), and Mertha's daughter, Beulah Thompson (3). [3] The Census of 1920 has them living on their farm with Serena, Sophia, Beulah and "uncle" Ivan Hackney (11). [4] By the 1930 Census, Valentine and Mertha are living alone. [5]
Mertha passed away in 1931.
He passed away in 2 Jan 1936 in Olney, Richland, Illinois. [6] Valentine was buried 4 Jan 1936 in the Ingraham Cemetery, Pixley Township, Clay, Illinois beside Mertha Hackney. His death record confirms his date and place of birth. The record also identifies a third wife, Lora.[7]
