Biography

He was in about 1774, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, the son of John Smith (d. 1810), and Mary Sheard (d. 1829). His father was a Bookseller, of Angel Street, Sheffield

John was a tutor at Dissenting Academy at Homerton
John was a nonconformist minister

He studied at

  • Rotherham Independent College (1796-1800)
  • Yale, DD (Hon.) (1807)

Aberdeen Marischal, LLD (Hon.) (1836)

Admitted to Rotherham in 1796, 'but, on account of some imprudent conduct, on which the committee cannot but pass their censure.... [recommended that] he be suspended from the further benefits of this Institution until the next Vacation.' (Rotherham Minutes, 4 Jan. 1797)

He became

  • a Tutor at Homerton and minister at Old Gravel Pit Meeting;
  • honorary professor at New College, London.


Tutorial career at Homerton Academy

  • from 1801 to 1806, resident tutor
  • from 1806 to 1850, theological tutor
  • from 1843 to 1850, resident tutor

He taught: philosophy, logic, rhetoric, astronomy, physics, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, natural philosophy, chemistry, natural history, ontology, composition and rhetoric, history, mathematics, theology.

Society membership: Fellow of Geological Society, Fellow of the Royal Society.[1]

John was included in the Dissenting Academy at Homerton 'Address to the Members of the Society for educating of young men for the Work of the Ministry', published in 1812, and was shown as Rev. John Pye Smith, of Sheffield, now Dr. Smith, succeeded Rev. John Berry as resident tutor.

John was also included in the Dissenting Academy at Homerton list, published in 1812, of annual subscribers, and was shown as Rev. J. P. Smith, D.D., baptist.

John died about 1851 in Stoke, Guildford, Surrey.[2]

John's death (age 77) was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1851 in the Guildford Union district.[3]

John died on 5 February 1851 and was buried in Stoke Newington, London Borough of Hackney, Greater London, England.[4]
