Spytihněv is the older son of Bořivoj I and Ludmila. He was most likely born in Levý Hradec, the family seat of the Přemyslid family, a few miles northwest of Prague. He was about 13 years of age when his father died around 889 so Svatopluk I of Great Moravia took on the rule of the Central Bohemian lands of the Přemyslids. After Svatopluk's death in 894 Spytihněv became duke. He began to loosen his ties to Great Moravia already after 895 and swore felty to emperor Arnolf von Kärnten. It was most likely he who entered into a treaty with the Hungarians which protected Central Bohemia from their raids and allowed him to consolidate the Přemyslid rule. He was most likely responsible for the building of Prague Castle and the move of the family seat to Prague. The sparse historical records for this time do otherwise not allow to distinguish between his and his brother Vratislav's contributions to the development of Bohemia. He died in 915 without children and was succeeded by his brother.[1]
