Biography

Pauline was born in 1911 to Mirabeau Nutter and Lizzie Hogg in Shelton, Nebraska.

Pauline earned her B.Ed. from Kearney State Teachers College. In 1934, she earned her M.S. "with distinction" from the University of Arizona under the direction of Dr. Lila Sands, the University of Nebraska’s first woman to earn a PhD. In 1938, Pauline earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Rochester.

In 1938, Pauline took a position in the department of food economics and nutrition at Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas. This must be where she met Thomas Doryland because his family was living here.

In 1941, Pauline took a teaching position at Utah State College in Logan, Utah.

In 1942, Pauline married Thomas Doryland in Shelton, Nebraska.

In 1945, Pauline joined the University of Nebraska Department as an Instructor. In 1951, she was promoted to Assistant Professor. In 1966, she was promoted to Associate Professor. In her later years, her office was located on East Campus because she taught two courses per semester there. In the mid-70’s, her office was moved to Hamilton Hall when the East campus Chemistry labs were shut down.

In 1976, Pauline retired and helped her husband in his crop-spraying company.

In 1980, Pauline passed away in Lincoln.

RECEIVES DEGREE AT UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER

Pauline Nutter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Nutter, received the degree Doctor of Philosophy in nutrition and physiological chemistry at the June Commencement exercises of the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. Dr. Nutter is a graduate of Gibbon High School, Kearney State Teachers College and the University of Arizona, and also studied at Washington University in St. Louis. She will teach at Kansas State College in Manhattan next year, taking the place of Dr. Martha Kramer, Professor of Nutrition, who is on a leave of absence.

Nutter-Doryland

Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Nutter of Shelton, Nebr., announce the marriage of their daughter, Pauline Elizabeth to Mr. Thomas Doryland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Doryland of this city. The marriage took place at the home of the bride, Sunday, September 6. The service was read by the Rev. Herman Voss, an uncle of the bride.

The bride is well known in this city, having been assistant professor in the home economics department three years at Kansas State. The past year she has been connected with the State college at Logan, Utah. She was graduated from State Teachers college at Kearney, Nebr., did graduate work at the University of Arizona and received her Ph. D. from the University of Rochester, Rochester, N. Y.

Mr. Doryland attended Kansas State three years and is graduating from the Lincoln Flying School Lincoln, Nebr., this month, after which he expects to be flying instructor at an army camp. The couple are at home in Lincoln for the present.
