Biography

The siblings of Jane Norton all came from Ireland to Australia, eventually bringing their mother. It seems to have been the intention that the father would work until he could also make his way, but sadly he never made it.

William Norton and Mary née Bentley had...

  • Anne Norton b. abt. 1834. d. 27 Aug 1878. Arrived on the Bolton 23 Jun 1853. Married Robert Berry in Sydney (licensee of the Bakers Arms)

The youngest three brought their mother Mary on the Mangerton arriving 29 Jul 1855, lived with Anne a while then went with Thomas, northwards...[1]

Eventually Jane married James Lancaster in the Macleay River district. He died relatively young. After the death of her husband James Lancaster, she re-married to Cornelius Christian, and lived in Clybucca.

The late Mrs. Christian in bygone years was closely identified with farming and business interests, and was held in high esteem, particularly, by the older settlers, who remember her a winsome young woman coming to this country with her brother, the late James Norton, well over half a century back.

Hi Andrew

Yes the change of category is purely maintenance. All immigration categories are being streamlined. Apparently there are different levels that will no longer have profiles attached to them. As for the unsourced tag this profile has some fantastic newspaper articles but not a single primary source for her marriages or death

I've added the primary sources I could find and removed the tag. You can change them to any format you wish.

Unfortunately a quick look at other of your family profiles - unfortunately they are missing primary sources also.

Christian is her surname at death and is not reflexed in her name at all. Amanda

Thanks. Concerning sourcing tags, my question was more about what actions to prioritize in order to get rid of those tags. Because Wikitree tags are big and loud, I tend to see tagging as something to be used when there are real doubts rather than just potential improvements to be made. For profiles further back in time where only serious researchers go, tags don't worry me so much, and that is where I work most, but for 20th century people I'm worried that they'll scare away potential relatives from looking into Wikitree. (And recent generations is where I could use more help.)

Anyone can remove a tag but it's better to add some primary sources as soon as you can. There is a new Sourceathon due in the first weekend in October so they are looking for profiles to "improve" with sources for that "quest".

Sourceathons are not my thing Amanda, and like I said I tend to hope 20th century profiles will be worked on by the much larger number of genealogists who are less comfortable working on the older profiles which I mainly work on. Old newspapers are primary sources by most definitions though.

Concerning sourcing tags I do wish they were less dramatic and more specific, but I don't like the idea of removing them without discussion.
