Biography

Jacob Mouser was born about 1769. He was the son of Johann Jacob Mouser [Mauser] and Catherine [Shedaker] Mouser.

Jacob married Christina Andries on October 18, 1790, in Frederick County, Virginia.

  • Christina Andries was born ______________________________. She was the daughter of _______________________________ and ______________________________.

Jacob and Christina Mouser are calculated to have had at least eight children together. They are as follows: 1. UNKNOWN son (born 1794 to 1800), 2. UNKNOWN daughter (born 1802 to 1804), 3. Rebecca [Mouser] Wilson (born 1803), 4. UNKNOWN son (born abt. 1810), 5. Elizabeth [Mouser] Mouser (born 1810), 6. Benjamin J. Mouser (born abt. 1812), 7. Mary Ann [Mouser] McFarland (born abt. 1814), and 8. Sarah Mouser (born abt. 1815).

Jacob and Christina Mouser are known to have lived and raised their family in what was at the time Monongalia County, Virginia.

  • Monongalia County, Virginia was formed in 1776 when Virginia's remote District of West Augusta was divided into three counties: Ohio, Yohogania and Monongalia, all named for their most prominent rivers. Ohio County then encompassed most of the western region of the district bordering the Ohio River, including parts of what is now Southwestern Pennsylvania. Yohogania County consisted of much of what is now southwestern Pennsylvania and the present counties of Hancock and the northern part of Brooke in West Virginia. Monongalia County also encompassed what are now the counties of Tucker, Randolph, Harrison and Barbour in north-central West Virginia, as well as parts of what are now Washington, Greene and Fayette Counties in Pennsylvania.

The remainder of Monongalia County, Virginia became Monongalia County, West Virginia in 1863, during the American Civil War (1861-1863). Present day Monongalia County, West Virginia is surrounded by the adjacent counties of Fayette County, PA (northeast), Greene County, PA (north), Marion County, WV (south), Preston County, WV (east), Taylor County, WV (southeast), and Wetzel County, WV (west).

According to the 1820 United States Census, Jacob Mouser (age 45-up) lived in the Eastern District of Monongalia County, Virginia (later to become West Virginia). Also counted (but names not listed) were his wife, Christina (1 female age 26-45), son, Benjamin (1 male age under 10), son, Jacob (1 male age 10-16), UNKNOWN (1 male age 18-26), daughter, Mary Ann (1 female age under 10), daughter, Elizabeth (age 10-16), UNKNOWN (female age 16-18), 2 people in the family were listed as engaged in agriculture (Farmers).

According to marriage record information for the couple, Jacob's daughter, Rebecca Mouser, married Abraham Charles Wilson either on December 28, 1821, or January 10, 1822, in Monongalia County, Virginia. It is most likely that the couple obtained the marriage license in December and were married on January 10, 1822, as indicated by the attached photo image of Abraham and Rebecca's marriage record. According to the typed transcribed record, their wedding ceremony was performed by Rev Joshua Hickman.

  • Abraham Charles Wilson was born on April 7, 1796. He is believed to have been born in Morgantown, Monongalia County, Virginia. He was the son of William Wilson and Rebecca [Ferguson] Wilson.

Abraham and Rebecca Wilson made their home in Taylor County, Virginia (later to become Taylor County, West Virginia). Abraham was a farmer and blacksmith. The couple are known to have had __________ Children together.

According to the 1830 United States Census, Jacob Mouser (age 60-70) lived in the Eastern District of Monongalia County, Virginia. Also counted (but names not listed) were his son, Benjamin (1 male age 30-40), daughter, Mary Ann ((1 female age 15-20), UNKNOWN male, (age 20-30), UNKNOWN (1 male age 30-40), daughter, Mary Ann (1 female age 15-20), daughter Elizabeth (female age 20-30), and UNKNOWN (female age 20-30).

According to the 1820 and 1830 census records listed above, it appears that Jacob's wife, Christina [Andries] Mouser had died before 1830, presumably in Monongalia County, Virginia.

According to marriage records for the couple, Jacob's daughter, Mary Ann Mouser, married Joseph McFarland on April 7, 1834, or April 8, 1834, in Monongalia County, Virginia. They most likely obtained their marriage license on the 7th and were married on the 8th. According to the attached photo of the typewritten transcribed record, the couple's wedding ceremony was performed by Rev Joseph A. Shackelford.

  • Joseph McFarland was born__________________. He was the son of ______________ McFarland and _____________________.

According to marriage records for the couple, Jacob's son, Benjamin J. Mouser, married Mary Ann Marple on April 16, 1835, in Allegany County, Maryland. According to family records and other documentation, Benjamin and Mary Ann Mouser made their home in Monongalia County, where they raised their family.

  • Mary Ann Marple was born April 20, 1812, in Hampshire County, Virginia (according to her West Virginia death record). She was the daughter of George Marple and Mary [McFarland] Marple. Mary Ann's mother, Mary [McFarland] Marple is believed to be related to Joseph McFarland [mentioned above] and his father.

According to US Census records, Jacob's daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah, are known to have been living together as two single women, in the same household, near Pruntytown, in Taylor County, Virginia. It is believed that they may have been living there in 1850 as well.

It is presumed that Elizabeth and Sarah lived close to their married sister, Rebecca [Mouser] Wilson. According to the 1850, 1860, and 1870 US Census records, Rebecca lived in Taylor County, Virginia, with her husband, Abraham Charles Wilson and their children.

According to marriage records for the couple, Jacob's daughter, Elizabeth Mouser, married her first cousin, David Mouser, on ________, 1864, in Fetterman, Taylor County, West Virgina.

  • David Mouser was born _________________. He was the son of James Mouser and Mary [Potts] Mouser. This was David's second marriage. His first wife was ______________________________________.

David and Elizabeth Mouser did not have any children together.

Jacob's daughter, Elizabeth [Mouser] Mouser, died on November 8, 1872, in Marion, Marion County, Ohio. She was buried in the Marion Cemetery, in Marion County, Ohio. According to the inscription on her headstone, she was 62 years old at the time of her death. No birth year is given on the monument.

It is not known at this time what became of Jacob's daughter, Sarah Mouser, after 1860.

On June 25, 1880, Jacob's daughter Rebecca [Mouser] Wilson, died of old age, in Taylor County, West Virginia [See attached death record for Rebecca Wilson, Register of Deaths for Taylor County, West Virginia, 1880, page 14]
