Biography

describe the image
French Parent of Acadian Pioneer

Barbe Minguet was born in France by about 1600, based on her having married Martin Aucoin in about 1620. [1] Her place of birth is unknown but is likely to have been in or near the region of La Rochelle in Aunis (now Charente-Maritime), France, where she and Martin later had children together.[2][1]

Barbe and Martin were the parents of Acadian pioneers Michelle Aucoin and Jeanne Aucoin - as well as a son Nicolas Aucoin, who died as a child. It has been indicated that their eldest daughter Michelle, who was born about 10 years prior to Jeanne, may have been from a prior relationship. No record of Michelle's baptism has been identified, but Nicolas and Jeanne were both baptised at Saint-Barthélemy in La Rochelle, Aunis, France.[1]

Barbe Minguet passed away some time prior to January 1632, as Martin Aucoin remarried, to Marie Sallé, on 20 Jan 1632 at the church of Saint-Barthélemy in La Rochelle. Martin and Barbe's son Nicolas died just ten days after his remarriage and was buried at Saint-Barthélemy on 30 Jan 1632.[1]

Barbe's daughters Michelle and Jeanne Aucoin would become matriarchs of Acadie - marrying into the Boudrot / Boudreau and Girouard families, respectively. Martin's second wife Marie Sallé also eventually emigrated to Acadie, where she later remarried - but there is no evidence that Martin ever migrated and so may have died in France.[1]

Recherches DNA Research DNA. Barbe Minguet's daughters were Michelle and Jeanne Aucoin. The Mothers of Acadia Maternal DNA project is conducting ongoing research to verify their origins. In 2010, Stephen White reported that Michelle Aucoin had a Haplogroup H. I don't know the details re how many of her descendants were tested to support this report. Ongoing test results are also reported here. As of May 2014, 2 descendants have consistently reported H haplogroup, indicating European origins. Her sister Jeanne (5 reports) also has H Haplogroup.

In the first paragraph of the bio of Barbe Minguet, where the three children are listed, shouldn't the 2nd be daughter Jeanne, not son Jean? SAW shows Jean as son of Martin's 2nd wife, Marie Sallé, & lived only from . Nov 1632 to June 1633. Also, Barbe is still listed as mother of Francois (in the summary data above), although White firmly dismisses that claim, in his "Corrections."

Thanks for posting! Could be another as well.
Lesley, thank you for posting your comment. Perhaps that is Barbe Minguett's aunt? I don't follow Jeanne closely because she's not in my line, but I did just find her baptism record and I'll post it on her profile to show that her mother was indeed named Barbe Minguet.

Hello, I have found records for Barbe Minguette that show her birthdate as 1570, which would make her too old to be Jeanne's mother.
