Maria Miller Stewart was the first Black woman to speak to racially and gender mixed audiences. She was a teacher and writer as well as a lecturer.[1]

Maria Miller was born in Connecticut about 1803.

Maria married James W. Stewart in 1826 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.[2]

In the 1870 census, Maria was enumerated in Washington, District of Columbia, United States. She was a school teacher and the head of household.[3]

She passed away on 17 December 1879 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Washington, D.C.[4]
