Biography

Nancy was Cherokee.

Nancy Martin was born in the Cherokee Nation (East) in 1821. She was the daughter of John Martin and Lucy McDaniel, both Cherokee. [1] The family Removed to Indian Territory in 1837 and Nancy married David Bell, also Cherokee. They were the parents of three children, John Martin, James Foster, and Schermerhorn (died young). [2] David and Nancy separated and she was briefly married to William Cunningham. They were the parents of a son, Cicero Cunningham. [3] Nancy's third husband was Bluford West Alberty . [4] Cicero, James and John appear with her, listed as Nancy Alberty, on the 1851 Drennan Roll, living in Flint District. Bluford was an Old Settler, so he is listed separately on the Old Settler roll. They were the parents of a daughter, Beatrice, born about 1856. [5] Bluford and Nancy are listed on the 1867 Tompkins Roll, living in Cooweescoowee District. [6] Nancy passed away in 1871.
