They lived in Bruton, Somerset at the time of Clara's birth, but had moved to London by 1851.
Note: the 1851 census has Catherine and their daughter's middle names both listed as Latham/Lathan. No other record has this, so it may simply be a transcription error.
In the 1851 Census we find that William and his wife Catherine are resident in Great James Street, Marylebone.[3] He is described as a ‘grocer’, age ‘38’, from ‘Northaw’, and the head of household comprising his wife ‘Catherine Lathan [Latham?] Jones’ (also age 38, birthplace unknown), and daughter ‘Clara Latham Jones’ (age ‘4’, born ‘Briston [Bristol?], Somersetshire’). Bristol is around two hundred kilometres west of London but clearly William and his wife lived or had need to be in Somerset when Clara was born around 1847.
In 1861, the Census shows that William, Catherine, and Clara, are all still resident in Great James Street.[4] However, these records also show that his wife Catherine is actually four years older than him (so, born around 1809) and hails from 'St Georges, Middlesex'. Precisely where that may have been is unclear.
In 1871 William Jones (age 58, Grocer) lived in Marylebone with his wife Catherine (58) and daughter Clara C (23).[5]
In 1881 William Jones (age 68, Retired Grocer) lived at Maida Hill West in Paddington, London with his wife Amelia (68) and daughter Clara C (34, Annuitant).[6]
Moving forward to the 1891 Census we can only see that there is a William Jones, age seventy-eight (so born around 1813) who was born in Northaw but who is by then a ‘retired grocer’.[7] William is living at 50 St Marys Terrace, Paddington along with his wife Catherine, age eighty-four. His daughter Clara (age fourty-four) is also recorded as being resident and her place of birth is shown as having been Bruton, Somerset. Where they are living in 1891 is not far from Paddington Station, and around half-way between Kensington Palace and The Regent’s Park.
William Jones passed away on 26 Oct 1894, aged 81 years. His death was registered in Hendon, Middlesex in the last quarter of the year.[8]
"JONES William of 125 Glengall-road Kilburn Middlesex died 26 October 1894 Probate London 20 March [1895] to Clara Catherine Jones spinster Effects £1367."[9]
The census of 1901 confirms that William has passed. His daughter Clara (age fifty-one), and his wife Catherine (age ninety-four) are living in Glengall Road, Willesden.[10]
