Obituary: From the San Francisco Call, October 17, 1907 JUDGE HAWLEY DIES IN ST. FRANCIS HOSPITAL Jurist Unable to Cope With Disease Because of Advanced Age Thomas B. Hawley, formerly member of the circuit court of appeals and United States district Judge for Nevada, died early yesterday morning in St. Francis' hospital from kidney trouble. His death came as a great shock to his friends in professional and social circles. E. S. Hawley of this city, son of the decedent, 'went to Carson. Nev., several weeks ago and brought his father to this city. Hopes were held out for his recovery Tuesday, but he was unable to rally from a depression which set in on Wednesday. Judge Hawley was 7 7 years old and an honorary member of the bar association of San Francisco and of the Union League and Pacific Union clubs. His was prominently identified with Masonic circles, being a past master of Nevada chapter No. 6 of Nevada City and a member of the De Witt Clinton commanaery No. 1 of Carson, Nev. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Tralnor of Santa Barbara, and a son, Ernest L. Hawley of this city. Mrs. Mary H. Swift, a sister, lives In Los Angeles. Judge Hawley was born in Versailles, Ind., in 1830. When 28 years old he came to California, where he mined till 1855. From 1855 to 1857 he was employed in the county clerk's office of Nevada county. Two years later he was admitted to practice before the supreme court. Shortly afterward he was elected district attorney for Nevada county, and in 1870 became district attorney for White Pine county, Nevada. He served on the supreme bench of Nevada from 1872 to 1890, when he was appointed United States district Judge by President Harrison. At the organization of the circuit court of appeals for the ninth circuit he was chosen a member. Nine months ago he retired from the legal profession and has since been living quietly in Carson.
