Samuel was the son of John and Abigail (Austin) Hale

He married Abigail Austin, daughter of Uriah and Abigail (Case) Austin, on 14 Jan 1768 at Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut Colony - parents of Abigail, Lucinda, Eunice, Samuel II, Josiah, Orestes and Thomas Hale

He was a Revolutionary War Veteran, having served as Ensign with the 1st Connecticut Militia

He is buried at Kent Corners Cemetery, Suffield, Portage, Ohio, USA
