He is probably the brother of Heinrich Groh who also immigrated to the United States. Heinrich and Johann Georg had a half brother named Georg Jakob, but he is probably not the brother identified in the Schuppe Family Album as settling in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Johann Georg Groh married Charlotta Stahl on 19 October 1906 in Grimm, Russia. The couple immigrated to the United States on 27 March 1907, departing from Rotterdam, Holland, and arriving at New York, New York.
