Enlisted In Co B Of 74th Reg Of PA Vol Infantry Made Up Of Indiana And Jefferson Co Men, Led By Capt J G Wilson. Served As Guard On B&O RR. [11]
"He enlisted in Company B of the 74th Regiment, of the PA Volunteer Infantry commanded by Captain Peter C. Speucer"..."On 1 March, 1865 he enlisted in Company B of the 74th Regiment of the PA Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Captain Peter C. Speucer. His Captain was J.G.Wilson. His military records give account as follows: George T. Gray - 5'10" tall; fair complexion, auburn hair; grey eyes. In the line of duty, at Green Spring River in the state of West Virginia, on or about March 1865, contracted chills & fever which resulted in deafness and rheumatism. Self-treatment, as there were no hospital facilities. He was honorably discharged at Clarksburg, West Virginia, on August 29, 1865. Illness contracted in the line of duty left him partially disabled and at the time of his death had left him an invalid.[12][13]
Obituary:
"George Thomas Gray, an aged and highly respected citizen of this pace, dies on Wednesday, August 10th of Rheumatism and slow paralysis, in the sixty-fourth year of his age. The deceased was born in Clearfield County February 25 1829 and came to Punxsutawney over thirty years ago. He was a blacksmith by trade, and pursued his vocation until he was 60 years of age. He leaves a wife and 8 adult children, three sons and five daughters, all of whom are married. He also leaves 26 living grandchildren. All of his sons pursue the occupation of their father, that of blacksmith. The deceased was an old soldier and was buried by the G.A.R. post of this place with the honors of war. He was an industrious and honest man, a good husband and father, a kind neighbor and a faithful friend. He was a consistent Christian and dies in the serene calmness of perfect faith. The interment took place in Circle Hill Cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev Hall, assisted by Rev's Helm and Montgomery, a large concourse of relatives and friends following the the remains to the tomb."[14]
"His occupation until his enlistment was blacksmith"... "He was a blacksmith by trade. George's blacksmith shop was on the south side of Union Street, near Mahoning Street in Punxsutawney, PA. His two sons,Allison and Joseph were blacksmiths as well and had a shop on Indiana Street in Punxsutawney."[16]
After their marriage they lived on the Bovard Farm near Marion Center. They later lived in Young Township outside of the borough of Punxsutawney. George and his wife,Barbara,were the parents of these known children:
