Biography

The Reverend Miles Garthwaite was born around 1576, possibly in Richmond, Yorkshire.^[1] He passed away in 1617.

He was educated at Cambridge and matriculated from St John's College in 1588. He was awarded B.A. 1592/3 and M.A. in1596.^[2]

Miles was ordained on 15 February 1597 and appointed Rector of Fulbeck parish in Lincolnshire on 3 April 1598^[3] a position which he retained until his death. According to Maddison's Lincolnshire Pedigrees, he was presented to the living by Queen Elizabeth.^[1]

Miles married Hellen Audley on 8 May 1599 in Hackney, Middlesex.^[4]

The Reverend Miles Garthwaite died (age 40) on 4 January 1616/17 and was buried in Fulbeck in the chancel of St. Nicholas Church. On a flat gravestone in the church is the inscription:^[9]

Enclosed here Miles Garthwaites corps doe rest;

His spirit, Heaven hath for ever blest.

He - loving Pastor - like Christ's sheepe susteyned

With sacred writ, Soules food by Christ ordeyned.

All Pastors - preach God's word; all People heare,

That you may rest with Christ, our Saviour deare.

Obiit, 4^to die Januarii, Anno D[omi]ni 1616 ætatis suæ 40.

Miles Garthwaite parson of Fulbeck's estate passed probate in the Consistory Court of Lincoln in 1616.^[10]
