Roy was born in 1915 the son of Ernest Ellem and Rachel (Baker) Ellem. He enlisted in the Australian Army in 1939 and posted to the reinforcements for the 6th division. Deployed to Greece along with his brother Henry Ellem to defend an airfield he was badly wounded. He was rescued by the New Zealand Maori unit and taken by small boat to a Royal Navy ship that transferred him to Crete. He eventually returned to Australia where he was discharged as unfit for further service.
