Mary Helen Clerk was born on 13 February 1915. She was the daughter of Herbert Edward Clerk and Helen Heuer.

She was educated at St. Paul's Girls' School, London, England. She graduated from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)

She married Michael George Russell Adams, son of Captain Henry George Homer Adams, on 22 December 1939.
