Biography

I was born in Rhodesia in 1973 to Ian Rawson Chapman and Jill Moira (Nuthall) Chapman. I know that I have several half-siblings on my father's side. It was my mother's second marriage, and I have a half-brother and sister on that side of the family.

My mother separated from my father when I was still young and returned with me to Cape Town. She then returned to Sinoia for a few years, but I can remember being back in Sea Point, Cape Town for my early years of schooling. By this stage my mother had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and we lived in various flats in and around Sea Point.

I attend King's Road Primary for what we then called Pre-Primary, Sub-A and Sub-B (now grades 0-2). It was a co-educational junior section to a girls' primary school. I have always remembered the school motto: "They can who think they can".

I then attended Sea Point Boys' Primary (it has since become co-ed) and we lived in a flat in Worcester Road. The Sandri-family who owned the building allowed us to live in a bachelor flat on the ground floor, and they assisted my mother in many ways financially. These were the happiest of my childhood years. We lived one building away from the beach, my best friend lived upstairs and Marco Bachetta was allergic to chocolate!!! His parents made the best risotto ever.

During this period my mother's disease slowly progressed, and whereas she was once known for walking the length and breadth of the suburb at high speed, she progressed from one walking stick, to two and eventually became wheel-chair bound. My mother had always been fairly close to her younger sister, Renee (Nuthall) Brown, and the family often shared combined birthdays in the Camps Bay park (its still there - fire-engine and all!!!) as so many birthdays were in February and March.

In 1984, at the start of Std 4 (Grade 6) I was sent to live with my aunt in the Strand. I attended WEG Louw Primary and I can remember my first encounter with a googol, and spending an entire break writing down the 1000 zeroes. I was misinformed back then, as a googol is only 10^100. I suspect that having twin sons was bad enough, but taking care of a third young teenager was overload, and so another plan to take care of me had to be made.

Next edtion - the Boys' Town years.

Hi Evan, thanks for your email last week on the Pike/ Talbot links here in Australia. I can't see any Nancy (Pike-2807) in that branch of my tree, but will keep my eyes open. Good luck with it all.

Hi there Evan,

Hi there,

We are really happy that you took the Pre-1700 certification Quiz. Thank you for doing your part to make WikiTree an accurate and openly collaborative place for genealogists to share their research.

Do you have some 1700's people in your tree already ? Now that you have the badge, you can take part in one of our historical projects.

If you have any questions, you can contact one of our Mentors or Volunteer Coordinator, Erin .

Have a great day !

Hi Evan, welcome to the Project Dutch Cape Colony! I am the research coordinator and as soon as you are familiar with the basic workings of WikiTree, drop me a mail and we can discuss what you'd like to bring to the project and in which way. Important in this project is to remember that WikiTree works collaboratively towards one profile per name (person) so it is really necessary to get to know and respect the context of the spelling of the LNsAB (surnames) and do the research as best possible with the primary sources (baptismal records) though even they might be flawed at times. LN'sAB spelled when followed by a first name with lower case capitals for the such as Philip van der Walt (this goes for near all of the Dutch, French and South-African surnames). If you need any help ask. Thanks

Hi and Welcome Evan!

I'm glad you found us. To become a full member (aka Wiki Genealogist), you’ll need to sign the Honor Code. For a list of helpful links, please click my name and check out the links under my "Greeter" section – especially the Sources links and the link to my fellow greeter Debby, who has helpful information on her profile page also.

If you get stuck on anything and can't find an answer in Help (upper right on a WikiTree page), you can post to the G2G forum or give me a holler.

Thank you for joining our collaborative tree!

Remember that our mission is to build a global tree with just one profile per person, so please look for duplicates before adding a profile.

Enjoy!

I am keen to use the internet to see how my roots in Southern Africa stretch back to England, and to see if there is a connection to the Chapmans of Ohio. Part of this is driven by my own complex family structure and the desire to know more about my past and the members of my extended family that I never met or knew.
