Biography

Benjamin Brown is the grandson of William Brown who came from England and among the first settlers of Hatfield along the Connecticut River. He is also the son of Capt. John and Mary E. (Jones) Brown.[1] His father served in the Colonial Army during the French War and represented the town of Leicester in the Massachusetts legislature during the Revolution.

Benjamin joined a regiment of Minutemen in February of 1775. In May he was commissioned a Lieutenant in Colonel Prescott's Regiment of the Massachusetts line and, in June, participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Two of his brothers, Pearly and John were also at this battle. John was wounded and removed from the field. Pearly was later killed at the Battle of White Plains. Another brother, William, died in the hospital.

In January of 1777, Benjamin was commissioned Captain in the 8th regiment of the Massachusetts line.[2] In 1779, he resigned his commission.

Benjamin married Jean Thomas in Massachusetts in 1772. About 1789, he moved his family to Hartford, Washington, New York which was then a new settlement, then, in 1796, bought land in Ohio. Jean lived until 1840. Among the children of Benjamin and Jean are:

  • Sarah "Sally" Smith, b. 31 Oct 1774[3]; m. Abel Glazier
  • William
  • Samuel Mason
  • Gen. John
  • Apphia, m. Thomas McClure Hamilton
  • Judge Archibald Green
