William 'Bill' David James Bain was born in 1908 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the elder son of teenage parents David Bain and Thomasina Brown. [1] He subsequently had a younger brother, John/Ian, and two sisters, Jean/Janet and Martha/Matty. Their father was killed in action in France in 1916 and their mother married again in 1919, to Robert Strang. However, she died in childbirth in March 1922.
Aged fourteen or fifteen, Bill was sent to Queensland soon afterward, possibly in 1923, to a home for 'troubled boys'. It is doubtful that he ever heard from his siblings or extended family again. He did, however, retain a thick Scottish accent all his life.
William married Florence Wright on 13th September 1933 in Queensland. [2] They had a daughter, Gloria.
Bill married a second time, to Nesta Hooper on 14th December 1939 in Brisbane, Queensland. [3] They made their home eventually on Wilston Road, Newmarket, and became involved in the life of the Newmarket Baptist (later The Grange) Baptist Church, having a son, David, and five daughters, Heather, Meryl, Lorelle, Linda and Alison.
Bill was a Life Boy Leader in the 17th Brisbane Life Boys' Team, The Grange Baptist Church for many years throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Life Boys, in Australia, were later re-named No. 1 Section of The Boys' Brigade and later still Junior Section.
Aged 72 years, Bill passed away on 16th October 1980 in Brisbane. [4] He was survived by Nesta, his six children and their partners, and several grandchildren.
