Yamazaki Tomie was a beautician and war widow, best known for being the lover of author Tsushima Shūji (Dazai Osamu).
Her father was Yamazaki Haruhiro (山崎晴弘), founder of Ochanomizu Beauty School, Japan's first beauty school. Tomie was his second daughter.
She married Okuna Shūichi on 9 December 1944. On 21 December, just ten days after their marriage, he was assigned to his company's Manila, Philippines branch. When the Americans landed in the Philippines, Okuna went missing in the ensuing battle.
Sometime later, she met Dazai Osamu, a patron of her shop. Osamu effectively abandoned his family and moved in with her.
They committed suicide together by drowning themselves in the rain-swollen Tamagawa canal near Osamu's house on Jun 13, 1948. Their bodies were not discovered until three days later.
