Steven Larkin Winters was born in 1801, the son of William and Lavinia (Stephens) Winters, in Tennessee. The family would move west into Indiana while he was a boy.
Steven met and married Mary Ann Harness in Indiana. She was the daughter of unknown parents. They would have twin sons:
Andrew Jackson Winters (1825–1900)
George Washinton Winters (1825–1850)
Steven and Mary evidently divorced shortly after the birth of their children since she lived on until 1925.
Steven married his second wife, Mary Melinda (Leatherman) Evanson, the daughter of Thomas and Melinda (Unknown) Leatherman, on February 12, 1827, in Monroe County Indiana. This was Mary's second marriage as well but she had no children from that union.
Steven and Mary moved to Illinois and had the following children:
James Ross Winters (1827–1903)
Henry Leatherman Winters (1830–1884)
Mary Ann (Winters) Feltner (1832–1915)
Steven worked as a wagon maker and as a farmer over the years to support his family.
By the 1870 U.S. Census, Steven was listed living in the home of his son James in Richland Township, Labette County, Kansas. This is where Steven died in 1876. He was 75 years of age. Steven's body is buried in the Lake City Cemetery in Lake City, Barber County, Kansas.
