Buchan Observer and East Aberdeenshire Advertiser 22 January 1895, page 4:
PETERHEAD—NAVAL RESERVE FUNERAL —On Friday the remains of Mr George Winter were laid in the cemetery with naval honours. Mr Winter was native of Peterhead, and for many years Hailed in whaling vessels from this port to Greenland. He was a member of the Naval Reserve Force, and came up for his drill this season as usual. A short time ago, however, he fell ill and had to go to Aberdeen Infirmary for treatment. Unfortunately, his illness terminated fatally last week, and his remains were brought to Peterhead by the s.s. Sweet Home. Although the weather was very unpropitious, the funeral was attended by a large number of persons. The cortege, as it moved from deceased's residence, was headed by a firing party of 30 of the Naval Reserve, with arms reversed, under the command of Chief Officer Pearce. Then came the Band of the Peterhead Rifle Volunteers, under Bandmaster Dimmer, plaing the Dead March in "Saul." Immediately behind the coffin, covered with the Naval Reserve pall, surmounted with wreaths of flowers, and borne by his comrades. Following were the chief mourners and general company, and a large number of Reserve men brought up the rear. The funeral service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. Dr. Stewart, Parish Church, and three volleys were fired over the grave.[4]
He had only just returned from Greenland whale fishing in the vessel Eclipse in November 1894 when he was seized with a chest complaint.
