The book is reasonably reliable as this type of compilation goes, but not without errors or discrepancies when compared with other sources, generally in respect of the spelling of odd ball (and other) names, but occasionally more substantively. I do not know where the 1838 birth year currently applied comes from, but it appears to come via Ancestry.com which I do not trust much. (Maybe that's just me...I am, in any case, generally too mean to pay for stuff they invite you to pay to look at.)
I would welcome a second opinion (maybe more) on changing the birth year from 1838 to 1941.
As an aside, although Barnwell County exists today, I've a feeling that before the Civil War - ie at the time when our man was born - the area of Barnwell County would simply have been considered as part of Beaufort District. If I'm right about that, then attributing his birth to Barnwell County as his birth location becomes anachronistic. whether in 1838 or in 1841. However, I claim no special insights on this point and am open to correction. In any case, I'm more interested, for now, to get the birth year as close to correct as, using the sources currently available, we can.
