Biography

Janet (Wightman) Murphy was born in Scotland.

Janet was born about 1808 at New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland and baptised on 17 March 1808 at New Abbey^[1][2]. She was the daughter of John Wightman and Janet Wright.

She married John Murphy on 21 June 1836 at New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire^[3]. They had at least seven children.

In 1841 she was living with her husband John (a farmer aged 30 born out of the county), their three children - Mary (3), Andrew (2) and Jannet (2 months), two male servants and two female servants at Fordhouse Farm, Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire^[14]. She was aged 30 and born in Kirkcudbrightshire. In 1851 she was at the same address with her husband John (a farmer aged 44 of 80 acres employing four labourers, two male and two female, born at Dunscore, Dumfriesshire), their seven children - Mary (13), Andrew (11), Janet (9), John (7), Agnes (5), Nicholas (3) and Catherine (4 months), a female house servant and a female farm labourer^[15] She was a farmer's wife aged 43 and born at New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire.

In 1861 she was still at the farm with her husband John (a farmer aged 54 now with 131 acres), six children - Mary (23), Janet (20), John (18), Agnes (15), Nicholas (13) and Catherine (10), and a dairy maid^[16]. She was aged 53,

Her husband died on 3 January 1863 at their home at Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire^[17]. In 1871 she was living with her daughter Janet (30), her husband John Hunter (an agricultural labourer aged 35) and their three children - Janet (3), John (1) and Elizabeth (1 month) - at Main Street, Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire^[18]. She was a retired farmer's wife aged 63.

Janet died on 13 June 1874, and her death was registered at Lochrutton^[19].
