Biography

Born in 1866 he was the son of Nathan Whitley.^[1]

UK Census Date 1871: Living with his father, aunt Mary Whitley and two siblings in Halifax, Yorkshire (West Riding), England. Aged 5.

After an early education boarding at Wiseman's House, Clifton College, he entered his uncle Samuel Whitley's cotton spinning business, S. Whitley & Co. at Hanson Lane Mills, Skircoat, Halifax.

He went on to become a British politician and Georgist.

In 1892, John married Margherita Marchetti at Halifax, Yorkshire, England.^[2]

They had two daughters and two sons:

Margaret Phyllis (b.1895)

Percival Nathan (b.1893)

Monica Virginia (b.1903)

Oliver John (b.1912)

He became Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Halifax in 1900, a seat he held until he resigned in 1928.

His wife Margherita died in 1925 and John Henry remarried in 1928 to Helen Clarke in Chelsea.

John died on 3 February 1935, aged 68, shortly before his 69th birthday.^[3]
