Biography

Ann Whitecross was born in 1815 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Her father is shown as Alexander Whitecross (1784-1868) in the 1861 census and her mother Janet Mitchel (1794-1856).

Ann married Robert Duguid on 22 Jul 1832, they had 7 children (3 sons and 4 daughters) [1].

Robert was a farmer in Townhead, Methlick and the 1851 census says on 100 acres of land. In the 1841 census in Methlick, Robert is 40 Farmer, Ann 25, Elizabeth 8, Jannet 6, Ann 4, Robert 2, Margaret 0 and also a Jean Whitecross 20 [2]. In 1851 census in Ellon, Robert 52, Ann 36, Eliza 18, Janet 16, Ann 14, Robert 12, Margaret 10, Alexander 6, Thomas 1 [3].

By the 1861 census, her husband Robert had passed away. Census in Methlick 1861 shows Ann 46, Robert 22, Eliza 28, Ann 24, Margaret 20, Alexander 16, Thomas 11 and her father Alexander Whitecross 78. Ann's mother Janet passed away in 1856 so it is likely that her father came to assist the family. Note that Janet (known as Jessie) her 2nd eldest daughter had passed away in 1858 aged 23 years [4].

The 1871 census sees three of her children pass away: Robert in 1862, Margaret in 1867 and Eliza in 1868. The 1871 Methlick census only shows Ann 56 as a housekeeper and Alexander 26, with no mention of Ann or Thomas [5].

By 1881 in Methlick, the census shows Ann 66 Farmer's mother, Alexander 36 and his family, wife Christina 31, Robert 5 and Mary Ann 4 [6]. The last census in 1891 Methlick, Ann is shown as 76 ANNUITANT, Alexander 46, Christina 42, Robert 15, Mary Ann 14, Alexander 8, Maggie Jane 6 [7].

She passed away three years later in 1894 aged 78 years in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and is buried in the Tarves Parish [8].
