Biography

James Early White was born in 1804 in what is now Greene County, Virginia, and was a slaveowner. He was called "Early" for his middle name, which was in honor of the Virginia First Family that produced General Jubal Anderson Early, the Confederate General and architect of the "Lost Cause," a central American narrative and ideology of the late 19th and 20th centuries that has been debunked and revised in the 21st century.

Upon his father's death, he assumed his tobacco plantation along the Lynch River near the border with Albemarle County and the old Austin meetinghouse that became Bingham Church.

James Early White was bequeathed a "girl," Keziah, upon his father's death in 1823, and likely assumed some of the other twenty-five human enslaved people belonging to his father James. In 1840, in Greene County, he owned two human beings, a male and female, both under ten years of age, though it is likely he managed his widowed mother's plantation as well. She owned fourteen human beings that year. In 1850, he owned one enslaved male, age 30 (Census, Slave schedule). It does not appear he brought enslaved people to Illinois when he left Virginia in 1852 nor to Missouri, where he arrived in about 1859.

He was the son of James White and Susannah (Bourne) White. He died on a farm north of Saint Catharine, in Linn County, Missouri, in 1881.
