Joy was senior teller at one of Winnipeg's largest banks when she met John. Was a model when young, after school became a teller for the Royal Bank of Canada - the #1 teller in their largest branch in Winnipeg. Married during WW2 to John while on leave and joined him at stations in Lincoln, NE, Alamogordo NM, and El Paso TX before returning to Winnipeg to have the first child.

Joy was very ill in summer and fall of 1962, in San Mato, CA Mills Memorial hospital for about 6-7 weeks including a week with a fever of 106+ that they couldn't bring down - I was told that Friday that she wouldn't survive until morning. I arranged for Last Rites, went to St. Matthews Church at 9 pm, prayed and told God that if he was going to take her, I'd let her go, but if she could be spared a little longer, would He do that, because she had a new baby at home and 8 other children. The next morning when I went to the hospital, she was NORMAL - the priest had been there but at 10 pm, her fever went away, she returned to her senses, was hungry and cheerful! It took another 5 weeks at Stanford to complete the healing.
