Biography

Richard Whalley, was born about 1558, the son of Thomas Whalley of Kirton and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Hatfield of Willoughby.[1]

He was a member of parliament for Boroughbridge in the forty third year of Elizabeth's reign (1602). Jaggar says that Richard (the younger) lived quite lavishly in the last two decades of the 1500s, wasting much of the family fortune, an act which he later regretted, since it impacted his children quite heavily as prices rose in the 1600s. By the 1620s, his wealth was a shadow of what it used to be, causing much bitterness and strife among his family, especially his son Thomas and brother John.

DNB (1899), states that Richard was sheriff of Nottinghamshire in 1595-6, knight of the shire in 1597, married as his second wife, Frances, daughter of Sir Henry Cromwell, and was father of Colonel Edward Whalley."

  • m.1 Anne, dau. of George Horsey of Digswell, Herts (mentioned in 1587 and 1592 deeds, see Jaggar)
  • m.2 (12 Jul 1595 license) Frances, dau. of Sir Henry Cromwell of Hinchinbroke
  • m.3 (29 Oct 1626 license) Jane Styrop

In the House of Commons, June 1, 1614: Whalley's Debt. L.1. An Act to make void divers Statutes, &c. continued upon the Lands of Mr. Whalley, to defraud Sir Robert Wynde of his just Debt.[2]

Death

There are many different death dates online for Richard, ranging from 1610 to 1635, but the Visitation of Notts gives the date 1632.

"...search has failed to reveal either will or letters of administration in P.R.O. or among the volumes of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society which catalogues the records held by the Borthwick Institute, York. The Bishops' Transcripts between 1630 and 1641 have no mention of him, but these are incomplete. Enquiry of the Episcopal Consistory Court of Lichfield, having jurisdiction over most of Derbyshire, also proved unsuccessful. A more definite date of death - c. Oct. 1632 - is supplied by P. Whalley in P.R.O. C6/123/172. Dated May and June 1654, this relates to a claim for dower and Thirds (allegedly in default of jointure), out of the estate of Richard Whalley, made by Jane (nee Styrrop), Whalley's 3rd wife and at that time widow of Edward Cosby, gent."(Jaggar, 45).

Third Wife

There seems to be a large amount of controversy regarding Jane Sterop as Richard's third wife, although she is quite well documented in deeds listed in Jaggar's work on the Whalley family, which has been posted online. There are also records on FMP confirming what had been written.

What is the evidence for the third wife Jane Sterop.

Also, it is not clear that the House of Commons reference refers to this person, could you add some information that confirms this. There were many Whalleys in Nottinghamshire.
