Biography

William was born about 1772. He was the son of John Weems and Sarah Goodwin. He married Mary Edwards in 1791 in Orange County. They were parents of four known children:

  1. Catherine “Katie” (Weems) Tombs 1794-1881
  2. Nancy (Weems) Smith 1796-1880
  3. William Ira Weems 1808-1849
  4. Charles Weems abt 1792-1824

William and Mary moved to Greene County, Tennessee with family, probably about 1792. Two of their children were born there and in 1799 William “Wems” was appointed overseer of the road from William Wilson’s to Bulls Gap road. He is on the tax list there in 1805.

By 1811 the family was in Maury County, where William Weems was assessed personal tax in 1811 and 1812. In 1814, he acquired 415 acres from Jones Kendrick, located on the north side of Fountain Creek.[1] The following year he purchased an additional 98 3.4 acres from Kendrick. That deed was witnessed by Charles Weems. [2]

Mary and Charles “Wims” submitted an inventory of William’s estate on 17 Nov 1817. Slaves Isham, Linday, and Ann were included. The 1817 estate sale of William was recorded under the name of William “Winns” and “Wims”. Charles Weems was administrator of the estate and his last documents were filed in Feb 1824, shortly before his own death.

Slaves

William bought eleven-year-old negro girl, Linda, from Roderick Wright in 1816.[3] He purchased four-year-old negro girl Ann in 1816 from Jeremiah Blackard.[4] Negro man Isom was listed in William “Wims” 1817 Inventory and sale.

  • Linda “Linday” Wright abt 1805
  • Ann Blackard abt 1812-?
  • Isom or Isham Weems abt 1790

Name

There is no known evidence that William had a middle name or initial. He had a son named William Ira, but no verifiable source has been found for that being the name of this subject.
