Horace Wallis was born on 17 July 1840 at Wadhurst, County Sussex, England and baptised on 23 August 1840 in the Parish of Wadhurst[1]. He was the son of Jacob Wallis and Ann Smith.
In the 1841 English Census, Jacob, Agricultural Labourer, and his wife Ann Wallis are living at Mill Cottage Wadhurst with their one year old son Horace[2].
When the 1861 English Census was taken Horace Wallis, Railway Porter, was living at Priory Row, Tonbridge, Kent, England and lodging with James and Mary Smith[4].

On 4th, 11th and 18th October 1868, Banns of Marriage between Horace Wallis of the Parish of Streatham and Matilda Munn of the Parish of Wadhurst were published[5].

In the 1871 English Census Horace Wallis, Domestic Servant Gardener, his wife Matilda, and son Walter W Wallis are living at Holly Grove, Streatham[8].
The 1881 English Census has Horace and Matilda Wallis, and sons Walter and Frederick Wallis living at Leigham Court Road, Upland Stables, Streatham, London. Horace is still employed as a Domestic Gardener[9].

In the 1891 English Census Horace and Matilda and sons Walter and Frederick are living at Buceleuch Road, Lambeth, London[10].
In the 1901 English Census Horace and Matilda Wallis are living at Berbice Cottage, Buceleuch Road, Lambeth, London. Living with them is son Frederick, his wife Elizabeth and their daughter Lilian. Visitor George Bryant is also recorded (the brother of Elizabeth).[11].
