George worked as a carpenter. He was the son of William Henry Wain and Kate Griffiths. His father was a hatter.
George died on 27 October, 1880, at the age of 32, after tripping and falling into mud in a gully at the side of Flemington Road, Melbourne. The inquest into his death found that he had most likely been stunned by the fall, and died of suffocation with his head in the mud.
“THE Friends of the Iate GEORGE ALFRED WAIN, miner, late of Ballarat, are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of inter-ment, Melbourne General Cemetery. The funeral will leave 153 Queensberry-street, Hotham, at 4 o'clock p.m.,THIS DAY. HENRY ALLISON, Undertaker, Victoria-street west, Melbourne, and 64 Elgin-street, Carlton.”[1]
He died intestate, and left £70, which was given to his wife. He left behind two sons and a daughter.
