Mary Ann Vant was born in 1829 in Sellindge, Kent, England. Her parents were Joseph Vant and Susannah Clements. Her date of birth may be 8 Aug 1829.

In 1841 she was age 11 and living in Hollingbourn, Lenham, Kent, England with her parents and siblings.^[1]

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family, departing from Gravesend, Kent, England on 17 Nov 1841, and arriving in Nelson, New Zealand aboard the ship London on 10 Apr 1842 as a twelve year old. Her parents and 5 siblings were also on the ship.^[2]

She married James Newport, another Nelson settler on 2 Apr 1849 in Wakefield, Nelson, New Zealand.
