William was born in 1792. He is the son of William Vane and Katherine Powlett. He was baptised on 5 May 1792 at St. James's, Westminster, London, England. He married Lady Grace Caroline Lowther, daughter of Lt.-Col. William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale and Lady Augusta Fane, on 3 July 1815 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square, London, England. He died on 6 September 1864 at age 72 at Raby Castle, Durham, County Durham, England, without issue. He was buried on 13 September 1864 at St. Mary's, Staincross, County Durham, England. His will was proven (by probate) on 29 October 1864, at under £180,000.[1]
He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 24 May 1809. He graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 10 June 1812 with a Master of Arts (M.A.) On 14 April 1813 his name was legally changed to William John Frederick Powlett by Royal Licence. On 4 March 1864 his name was legally changed to William John Frederick Vane by Royal Licence.[2]
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Winchelsea between 1812 and 1815. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for County Durham between 1815 and 1831. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for St. Ives between 1846 and 1852. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Ludlow between 1852 and 1857. [3]
He succeeded to the title of 5th Viscount Barnard of Barnard's Castle [G.B., 1754] on 18 January 1864He succeeded to the title of 3rd Marquess of Cleveland [U.K., 1827] on 18 January 1864. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Raby of Raby Castle, co. Durham [U.K., 1833] on 18 January 1864. He succeeded to the title of 5th Earl of Darlington, co. He succeeded to the title of 7th Baron Barnard of Barnard's Castle, in the Bishopric of Durham [E., 1698] on 18 January 1864.[4]
