He was baptised on 19 May 1844 in Poughill parish church near the seaside town of Bude in Cornwall, England.[3]
On the night of 7 April 1861, 17 year old William was a crew member on board the ship Nimble which anchored in Plymouth Sound. William's rank is Boy 1st class. [4]
William signed on as a cadet with the Royal Navy on 7 April 1862. [5]
William married Mary Ann Spurrell on 20 Feb 1871 at Stoke Damerel parish church in Devon. William’s occupation was stated as mariner and both parties signed the register.[6]

On the night of 2 April 1871, William's wife Mary Ann, a 25 year old dressmaker is on her own in a household at 27 Chapel Street, Stoke Damerel, Devon. There are four other families living at this address. William is probably at sea.[7]
William joined the Royal Navy in 1873. He was described as being 5ft 7 inches tall with light brown hair, hazel eyes and a fresh complexion. He transferred to the Coastguard Service in 1877.[5]

In the 1881 census William (age 36), Coast Guard, was the married head of household in East Budleigh, Devon, England. Two of his children, Emily and William were born in Greystones, Republic of Ireland suggesting William worked there c1878-9.[8]
In the 1891 census William (age 46), Custom Officer, was the married head of household in Steynton, Pembrokeshire, Wales. [9]
In 1901, William, principal boatman for HM Customs lives in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, Wales with his wife Ann M (sic) and five of their children. [10]
In the 1911 census William (age 66), Retired Naval Pensioner, was the married head of household in Milford Haven living with his wife and adult children Emily, Leslie and David. [11]
William's death (age 78) was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1922 in the Haverfordwest registration district of Wales. [12]
William and his wife are both buried in the Milford Haven cemetery in Wales. [see Research Note]

1851 Census occurred on the night of 30 March 1851. William, his parents and siblings have not been located in Cornwall or Devon.
Burial The original statement that both William and his wife Mary Ann are buried in Milford Haven Cemetery, Wales came from a 2008 gedcom import. It has not been verified.
