The first reference of H.Tõnnisson with the surname's old spelling is from Lloyd's Register 1890-1900. This document is irrefutable evidence of Captain Heinrich Tõnnisson, master of the Hans, spelt his name in an Estonian manner. Latvian records continue to use the surname Tenisons. And so Latvian periodicals describe in brief his exploits on the high seas taking cargoes to European ports.
