Eliza Jane Tyrone was born on February 8, 1827 in Lawrence County, Mississippi. She married Matthew Houston Carlisle on October 8, 1850 in Lawrence County, Mississippi. Due in part to the times and accent of the local people, her name was pronounced "Elizar". (Older people of the south are notorious for adding the sound of "r" at the end of words ending in the vowel "a").
Eliza was the daughter of John Tyrone (1794-1867) and Mary Maranda Parkman (1797-1871). Her siblings included (may not be a complete list): Amanda Carolina Tyrone Cannon (1831-1851), Elizabeth Tyrone Walker (1835-1909), Parkman Tyrone (1842-1924), E. P. Tyrone (abt. 1818-?), Jerome C. Tyrone (abt. 1818-?), Henderson Griffin Tyrone (abt. 1822-?), and Margaret Tyrone.
In August of 1880 she lived in District 1, Carley's, Marion County, Mississippi, in enumeration district 131. On line 12, family number 3, in Beat I (Carley's), she is listed in the census as Elizar Carlisle. She was described as a white female, age 53, a house keeper, single, and widowed. In her home lived the following individuals: Matta, white female, age 17, daughter, single, born in MS; John, white male, age 14, son, single, born in MS; and Margaret, white female, age 11, daughter, single, born in MS (lines 13-15).
Next door to them, household number 4, line 16, lived James Carlisle and his wife Manda, with their children.
On June 20, 1904 Eliza Jane "Eliza" died in Carley's, Marion County, Mississippi. She was buried next to her husband at Society Hill Cemetery in Prentiss, Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi.
Eliza Jane and Matthew had the following children (may not be a complete list): James Houston Carlisle (1852-1921); Mary Maranda Carlisle (1855-1935); Lou Ella Carlisle (1859-1914); Mathilda Eliza Carlisle "Matta" (1863-1930); Margaret Dezelle Carlisle Slade (1868-1942); Josephine Carlisle (1871-1875); Josephine Carlisle (1876-1876); John L. Carlisle (1876-1950); Adam Tyrone Carlisle, and Somryia Jane Carlisle.
