Biography

William was born in 1750. He passed away in 1799.

William Tyler is referred to in the Foster Town Council Book 1 [RI Roots March 1993 pages 25-27]: In the June 21, 1790 entry, three children of Stephen Place Jr were bound out as apprentices on June 6, 1789, two of them to William Tyler Esq. In the Feb 14, 1791 entry, Tyler Rice and Lydia Rice made choice of William Tyler to be their Guardian during their minority. It was voted that William Tyler be appointed guardian to Charles Rice.

Statewide Historical Preservation Report P-F-1 Foster RI, page 64: On Moosup Valley Road in Foster is the Judge Tyler's Tavern Stand (Mossup Valley) c. 1780 rebuilt 1815. "This center-chimney, 1 1/2 - story house, with set back ell to the west, was originally 2 1/5 stories tall but had to be lowered after the Great Gale of 1815. Built by William Tyler, Jr., Justice of the Peace and Town Councilman, the house served as a public tavern and a council meeting place. In a meadow west of the house the militia drilled during the Revolution. North of the house on "Potash Hill" a profitable business in tanning and potash was carried out in the 19th century."
