Biography

  • UNCONFIRMED AS THE FATHER OF JOHN who married Margaret Murray

The son of Francis, John Turnbull may have been an agricultural labourer or a joiner. In the building trades, a joiner is a type of a carpenter that cuts and fits joints in wood without the use of nails, screws, or other metal fasteners.

John married Helen Elliot likely in the Jedburgh Associate Church where Helen had been baptized on 20 April 1755. In 1733, the Succession Church or Associate Presbytery broke away from the Established Church of Scotland over the issue of The Patronage Act passed by the state enabled the landowners to place the ministers of their choice. The Secession Church believed that this right belonged to the people. Many tradesmen joined this church.

In 1755, there were 5,816 people living in the parish of Jedburgh.

Helen was 19 when she gave birth to their first child. Their first two children, Margrate and Francies, were baptized in the Jedburgh Associate Church but, John seems to have been born in Castleton, Roxburghshire on 1 Aug 1781 and baptized in Castleton. John was our ancestor.

Castleton is about 20 miles from Jedburgh. "Castleton, a parish, containing the post-office village of New Castleton, in the southern extremity of Roxburghshire... bounded on one side by England… In conversation, its name is Liddesdale, from the river Liddel, which runs through it from east to south. The upper or northern part is mountainous and bleak; but is generally dry, and affords good sheep-pasturage ... Population in 1831, 2,227." from the Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland, edited by John Marius Wilson, 1868.
