Biography

James Turnbull was born on 4th June 1820[1] at Rigg Gate, Nicholforest, Cumberland, England. He was baptised on 1st July 1820 at St Nicholas' Church, Nicholforest, to parents Robert & Nelly Turnbull.[2]

In 1841, James was living at Glendinningrigg Gate, Kirkandrews upon Esk, Longtown, Cumberland, with his parents Robert & Eleanor and sister Eleanor.[3]

On the 1851 census, James lived at Rigg Gate, Longtown, Cumberland, with his widowed father Robert and sister Eleanor.[4]

He married Jane Graham on 22nd June 1852 at St Nicholas' Church, Nicholforest.[5]

In 1861, James and Jane lived at Rigg Gate, Nicholforest, with their children Robert, Ellen, Stephen and James.[6]


He died on 19th March 1891 at Huirangi, nr Waitara, Taranaki, New Zealand, and was buried on 21st March 1891 at Huirangi Cemetery.[1]
