Biography

James Franklin Turnbull was born on November 2, 1889 in Algiers, Orleans, Louisiana, United States, son of Thomas Franklin Turnbull (1864–1919) and Grace Darling Heap (1868–1934).

Named for his maternal uncle, James Heap, an influential parent figure after James' father was removed from the family due to a degenerative illness. ^[1] As a result, the distressed family moved from Algiers to New Orleans to live with James' uncle and widowed grandmother, Margaret Heap. ^{[2] [3]} As time passed, local memory probably perceived no connection between father and son, a result of the area's population growth shifting toward less personal communal relations among social and business networks.

The transient nature of a new generation of Americans worked in James' favor as his career prospered. A successful Real Estate Agent, James' honest reputation warranted his inclusion in 1917's "Club Men of Louisiana," a collection of amusing yet respectful caricatures depicting stellar businessmen of fine character throughout New Orleans.^[4] That same year, he registered for WWI's draft. Called to serve despite being his mother's sole support, he enlisted in Jan. 1918. ^[5][6] Discharged in Dec 1918, James married a young widow in New York.

Together, they made their life in New Orleans. ^[8][9]

His hard work and local popularity allowed him to care for his family, including his mother who lived with him, in addition to two aging aunts, Ellen Turnbull Dreibholz, and Kate Turnbull, who lived nearby. In later years, he worked as a rent examiner for the New Orleans Rent Control Office, a position he held at the time of his first wife's death in 1942.

Married: 02 Apr 1943, widow Eleanor Campbell Gibbons, in New Orleans. ^[10]

Died: James passed away in 1963, one year after burying his aunt Kate, thus ensuring the gentle passing of those he loved. ^[11][12][13]
