Biography

Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, 3rd Baronet, was a United Kingdom politician.

He was born in 1870 in Middlesex, England (United Kingdom). ^[1]

He studied at Trinity College (University of Cambridge), Trinity Street, Cambridge, England. He was elected Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Elland, Yorkshire, England, in a by-election in 1899.

In 1904, he married Mary Katharine Bell in London, England. ^[2]

He opposed the United Kingdom's participation in the First World War, 1914-1918. He lost his seat in Parliament in 1918 but won the seat for Newcastle Central, Northumberland, England, in 1922, running as a candidate of the Labour Party. He served as President of the Board of Education in 1924 and from 1929 to 1931 in Ramsay MacDonald's Labour cabinets.

He succeeded his father as 3rd Baronet Trevelyan in 1928 and inherited Wallington Hall, near Morpeth, Northumberland. He was Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland from 1930 to 1949. In 1942, he donated the Wallington Hall estate to the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty.

He passed away in 1958 at Wallington Hall.
