Joseph Topping was born in about 1833 in Windle, Lancashire (on 25 Jul 1832 according to his FamilySearch tree entry, but there's no source there for the information.) He was the son of William Topping and Ellen (Houghton) Topping.

By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Gerards Bridge, Windle. William was working as a coal miner. 80-year-old Ellen Topping was living with them.

Joseph married Elizabeth Lea on 18 Sep 1853 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were living in Widnes, and neither had been married before. Joseph was 21 and a glass maker, Elizabeth was 20. Their fathers were named as William Topping (engineer) and Samuel Lea (boat maker). The witnesses were Samuel Ghost and Margaret Lea.
