Hi Laurie,

Thanks for adding so many of your ancestors from before 1700, such as Hannah Tompkins (1681-).

Since you are using the same source over and over, it would be nice if you could tidy up the formatting a bit so it renders nicely, otherwise, you are leaving behind work for others to come in after you and clean up something that would be more efficiently corrected up front before replication. Wikitree formatting can be tricky, so feel free to ask for help if you need it.

Because the William and Mary source you are citing is paywalled, it would be really helpful if you could quote relevant portions in your cites. Even better would be to provide a link to a version of the source that is not locked down. In this case, it appears that you can find it at Hathi Trust for free over here: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015064821229&view=1up&seq=118

Reading the version on Hathi Trust, it appears the Tompkins family was living in at least Pocoson Parish, York County, Colony of Virginia. Presently, your many created profiles have not listed any birth location at all, given that Wikitree covers ancestors from all over the world, knowing at least an estimate of birth or death location can be critical to finding the right ancestor as there may be many people of the same name spread out across the world who were born or died at about the same time. Therefore, please add to your created profiles your best estimate of either where they were born or died. Even a continent can help, like North America, however, in this case, it appears your ancestors are in the Colony of Virginia.

Please let me know if you need any help with any of this or have questions.

Thanks.

-William

Hi William,

I don't understand your comment about "paywalled". I got the info thru JSTOR - "Early Journal Content on JSTOR, Free to Anyone in the World". They "encourage people to read and share ...openly and to tell others that this resource exists". And basically use in any way for non-commercial purposes I assumed from that there was no problem in using the info i Wikitree..

Yes, you can use paywalled sites on Wikitree (e.g., Ancestry.com), it is just that if there is another option that is open and free, that is preferred. In the case of https://www.jstor.org/stable/1915709 it appears you need to have a school or institution account to access the paper or create an account and be limited to 10 free articles per month, whereas Hathi Trust offers unlimited access without having to create an account, so it is just easier for others to access.

Hi Laurie

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The United States Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Let me know by using the "reply" link under my comments or by clicking my name to visit my profile. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message.

Hi Laura,

I was doing some Data Doctor work and you should be receiving a notice, or two, about merging people. If you need some help with this let me know. I noticed you're new to us. I hope you're having a good time and finding everything you need. I just wanted to reach out and let you know if you have any questions you can email me or post them on G2. That's one thing I love about WT...there are plenty of people willing to lend you a hand. I know I pestered everyone when I first started but hey, I'm glad I did. You take care, Lucy

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Cheryl - maybe there is an easier way to enter sources. Many of them go to a URL and are very long and are used often. I hate to type each one anew every time. Is there a trick to do this. Especially difficult on an iPhone 5 keyboard.

Thank You for becoming a Family Member of WikiTree! Your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

I would suggest starting with New Member How-to pages which may save you a lot of time and frustration. Don't be afraid to ask questions in our G2G forum and get involved as much or as little as works for you. Be sure to check out the tabs at the very top right hand side of your profile, there is lots to discover!

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person.

Enjoy the site!
