Helen was born in 1914 and grew up in and near Berea, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. In the Polish language, "ń" is a separate letter of the alphabet, different from "n". But in the U.S. the surname was written Tomon, with ordinary "n".
Her middle name came not from Queen Victoria but from Wiktoria, a distant relative and childhood friend of my grandmother.
She was shown, age 15, living with her parents in the 1930 U.S. census, on Shady Lane, at Olmsted Falls, Ohio.
Helen married Bert Heiser in 1939. Their first child was stillborn in 1940. During World War II she worked in a war production plant at Cleveland, making airplane parts. After the war ended, she and her husband moved to Norwalk, Ohio, where two sons were born. Helen separated from Bert in 1955 and moved to New Mexico. They were later divorced.
In 1959 Helen remarried to Ignatz (Ig) Schwartz. For over 30 years they together operated Stockmen's Cafe at Springer, New Mexico. After they sold that business they took new employment, managing the kitchen at Vermejo Park Ranch, then owned by Pennzoil.
About 1994, she and several of her sisters made their first-ever trip to Poland, where they met a distant cousin and saw the area where their ancestors lived.
Ig died in 2003. Helen then moved with son Mike and spent her final years at Brevard, North Carolina. Helen passed away in 2010, soon after her 96th birthday. She was buried at Springer, New Mexico, beside her husband.
As I'm writing this in 2014, today would have been her 100th birthday. Happy Birthday, Mom!
