Bob Thoms is Notable.

Robert Arthur ("Bob") Thoms was born in Marylebone, Middlesex, England in about 1826.[1] Cricinfo gives an unsourced birthdate of 19 May 1826. [2]

He was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Thoms. He was living with his parents in 1851.[3] His mother Elizabeth was still living with him in 1871[4] and 1881.[1]

He was a noted English cricket umpire.[5]

He married Elizabeth Constance Farley on 28 July 1849 in Kent. She was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Farley. [6] [7]

They had a daughter Elizabeth, born about 1850, in Marylebone.[1] [8]

They also had a daughter Catherine Susannah Alice Thoms, baptised on 7 August 1853 at St Pancras Old Church, St Pancras, London.[9]

He died on 10 June 1903, aged 78, in St Pancras, London, [10][11] and was buried at Highgate Cemetery in Middlesex (now in the Borough of Camden, Greater London). [12] He was buried with his wife Elizabeth who had died in 1898.

Cricketing career

Bob's playing career started in 1850, playing for the Lords' Under 36 team (a team which included John Wisden of the Cricketers' Almanack fame) [13] against the Lords' Over 36 team. He only played three first class matches in which he batted in five innings and amassed 17 runs total. This was also his highest score. He finished with a career average of 4.25.[2]

He stood as an umpire and is best known for being one of the two umpires at the 1882 test match against the touring Australian team. This match resulted in Australia's first win against England. It gave rise to the term "The Ashes" for all subsequent series between England and Australia. [2]
