OBITUARY.
MR GEORGE THOMPSON.
Through the death of the late Mr George Thompson, which occurred on September 11th, Prebbleton loses one of its best known and most highly respected residents, and Canterbury another of its early colonists.
Born at Leamington, Warwickshire, in 1839. Mr Thompson, with his parents and their three other children, made the voyage to New Zealand in the Duke of Portland, arriving at Lyttelton on September 27th, 1851. The family first settled at Fendalton, removing shortly afterwards to the St. Albans district. Later on Mr Thompson was employed by the late Mr J. S. Caverhill on the Motonau station, but finally settled in Prebbleton in 1861 where he purchased a farm and a threshing plant, his being one of the first threshing mills in the district.
He married in 1862 a daughter of the late Mr James Streeter of Kennedy's Bush, the marriage ceremony being performed in the Riccarton Church by the Rev. Mr Bowen.
Some nine years ago Mr Thompson acquired a farm at Oxford, and went to live there. However, on account ,of failing health, he returned to Prebbleton early in 1917, where he lived in retirement until the time of his death.
Mr Thompson's wife and three of his family predeceased him, but he leaves five daughters and two sons to mourn their loss. There are also 38 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Mr C. Thompson, of Christchurch, is a brother, and Mrs G. Adam, of Christchurch. and Mrs Edward Prebble, of Riccarton are sisters of the deceased.
The interment took place in the Prebbleton churchyard on Saturday last.
