Nathaniel Thomas was born in 1606 in England . He likely emigrated with his father to Plymouth Colony in about 1635/6 – prior to November 1636. It is not clear if Nathaniel’s wife, Mary, came with him or he married her soon after arrival.
Nathaniel and Mary had at least six children.

Nathaniel Thomas of Marshfield was active in Plymouth Colony's small military force. Nathaniel served as an Appointed to exercise men at arms of Marshfield in 1638/39 in Marshfield, Plymouth Colony. In 1643 he was an Ensign in Capt. Myles Standish's company gathered to fight in the Pequot War. In 1648, he was made a Lieutenant. In 1653, he was part of the force gathered for a military expedition against the Dutch. On 5 March 1654, he was made Captain, to succeed Myles Standish in command of Plymouth Colony military.
In 1651, Captain Nathaniel inherited his father William’s estate.
Nathaniel died on 13 Feb 1674 in Marshfield, Plymouth at the age of 68. He was buried on 16 Feb 1674 in Marshfield, His remains, with those of his father, repose in brick graves, north of the centre of the field which they had given to the dead of Green Harbour. There can be found, with the inscriptions now almost effaced, their fragmentary memorial stones. “Here lyes the remains of Nathaniel Thomas gent who decd ye 19th day of February 1674 about ye 68th year of his age “.
Mary was still alive when her husband Nathaniel died. His inventory was exhibited to the court at Plymouth on 1 March 1674 on the oath of Mary Thomas, and Mr. William Thomas of Marshfield.[1]
