Biography

Name: William Thake of Barkway[1]
William Thake of Barkway was identified by John Threlfall as the son of Richard Thrake of Barkway, and father of Joana (Thake) Richardson who immigrated to New England in 1636.[1] From his will he was a malster, the same profession as his grandfather in his will.

Birth

Baptized: 11 August 1571 in Barkway, Hertfordshire, England.[1][2]

Marriage and Children

Married: Joan Wood, the daughter of Wood of the adjacent parish of Therfield, on 4 January 1597/8.[1][3] She was baptized in Therfield on 27 September 1574 and was buried at Barkway on 14 May 1621.
Children of William Thake and Joana Wood:[1]
  1. William Thake. Baptized on 11 Feb. 1598/9 in Barkway.[4] He m Grace Duxford on 27 June 1630 (related to Duxfords at Westmill), dau. of Andrew & Agnes Duxford.[5]
  2. Annys Thake. Born say 1601. Her baptism was not found and she is presumed to have been born in the gap between William and Steven. She was named in the will of her father as Annys Rugbye.
  3. Steven Thake. Baptized on 6 March 1602/3 in Barkway.[6]
  4. John Thake. Baptized on 20 May 1605 in Barkway.[7] Buried on 5 January 1606/7 in Barkway.
  5. Joana Thake. Baptized on 2 Feb. 1606/7 in Barkway.[8] She married Samuel Richardson on 18 October 1632 in Great Hormead, Hertford, England.
  6. Winifred Thake, Baptized on 28 December 1609 in Barkway.[9] Living and unmarried when her father made his will on 25 October 1630.
  7. Mary Thake. Baptized on 29 March 1612 in Barkway.[10] m 10 Oct. 1633, William Madle.[11]
  8. Robert Thake. Baptized on 9 Oct. 1614 in Barkway.[12] Buried 5 March 1622/3.
  9. Fortune Thake. Baptized on 2 November 1617 in Barkway.[13] She married John Cottise on 18 October 1638 in Great Hormead, Hertford, England.[14]

I give to the poor of Nuthampstead 5s, I give to Annis Rugbye my daughter 5s, I give to William Thake my son my leaden diskerne, etc. to the said William my executor hereafter named, I give to Stephen Thake my son £6, I give to Joan Thake my daughter £20, I give to Winifred Thake my daughter £20, I give to Mary Thake my daughter £20, I give to Fortune Thake my daughter £20 ... at age 21 ... residue to my son William Thake & he to be my sole executor.
